Artist's Statement
My work is inspired by Estonian ethnographic motifs, ornamentation, medieval stained glass windows and oriental mandalas. I am fascinated by non-figurative forms of expression - all kinds of symbols and abstract figures from different religions have proved to be a challenging source of inspiration, through change of scale and the use of colour.
Mystical experiences born in my inner self find expression through my textile works. Likewise, I am fascinated by sacred geometry and labyrinths. I have used circular and spherical forms that express the highest level of unity, completeness and wholeness.
I use materials and techniques that express an imaginary fragility and subtlety. I use laced embroidery, transparent and sheer textiles, which when layered and penetrated by light, can create a vision of higher dimensions and dreamlike spaces. From the rough qualities of wool and fibres to the shiny glitz of luxurious fabrics, exploring and experimenting with new ideas and materials to create textures using these media. I like to use a mixture of free machine appliqué with hand dyed fabrics, self-made non woven fabrics and hand stitch.
Working on wall-hangings, I am interested in using colour, texture and composition to create a feeling of space and to evoke a spirit of imaginative worlds. My work has always involved experimenting with the third dimension, whether for church embroideries or for wall-hung panels for exhibition. Hand stitchery, colour, transparency and texture form the basis of my work. I enjoy the tactile and fluid qualities of material, as well as the richness of surface texture that can be built up. I am interested in the creation of fabrics through bonding and embellishing making up unique surfaces on which to sew. In my works I converge a tumult of strong feelings and passions and broadcast in each case a positive impulse for life, love for life, despite its difficulties and contradictions.
