In her works Auste Jurgelionyte-Varne applies textile art and the textile tradition, animation, textile as a sculptural material, and presentation facilitated by video installation.
Her materials have been wool fibre and felted wool. With its various qualities, the material provides the artist with many possibilities while also containing numerous symbolic meanings. Wool is an ancient material from which felt is made by tangling the fibres with each other with the aid of soap and water. For this artist, felt signifies a connection with the crafts heritage of women and a technique of treating wool that was already known in archaic times. Throughout the ages, wool and felting have signified warmth, security, survival and opportunities for creative expression. Wool is a material that warms and cares for people, also involving a close symbiosis with the sheep that produce it. Jurgelionyte’s animation is like felt cover in continuous motion created by combining industrially made felt with different kinds of fibres that are partly separate. The artist utilizes the connotations of the material, plays with colours, uses the material’s lightness, structure and mass.
