Artist's Statement
I see my work as 'being in' or 'visualizing' a world I have perceived, or I am trying to perceive. This is the reason that I am trying, through my working process, to transform the inherent logic of time into the inherent logic of space and vice versa. The existence of which I regard as the expression of my sensitivity.
Mud Dyed Cloth Series: I consider that the use of mud becomes the transformation of material being into time - mud dyeing is a permeating process, enabling a transformation of time coherence into space.
Printed and Grinded Fabric Series: The corrosive action of printing on a plate can be understood to represent the transformation of material unity into time. Through the creation of the surface, which has spatial dimensions, the act of printing becomes the transformation of time into space.
Grinded Fabric Series: For me, the act of weaving, as the weft threads accumulate one by one, is a representation of time passing away; texture acting as the locus of the present time. Finally a piece of fabric is the result. To be specific, weaving for me should be the process of transforming the weft into accumulated space, replacing the vanishing time. Placing the fabric on the ground, I trace out the ground texture and grind out the surface of the fabric.
Permeated Black Series: I see dyeing as a transformation of time into space, the permeating process of black dyestuffs, resulting in a graduated black.
Kesa Series: I collected fragments of old, worn cloth and sewed them together adding some design elements, for example, dyeing with Chinese ink (sumi - zome) or mud and stitching. For me, used cloth holds memories and this expresses my basic concept of time being changed into space and space into time.
