Artist's Statement
My work explores the tradition of ‘quilting’, but goes beyond the functional or decorative, resulting in textiles than can be exhibited and displayed individually or as part of a series.
Each piece is focused on the tactile and visual qualities that result from dyeing, layering, stitching and bleached overprinting of cloth combined with the shrinking, stretching and subsequent distortion created through the process and the use of different cloth qualities. Traces of stitching are revealed through the discharging out of the dyed ground, so that the cloth and thread become one.
Whilst the development of the cloth, and continued engagement with textile practice is of obvious importance to the work, the content can be traced back to different sources. Travelling and the repetition of regular commuting, the surface markings, curves and the distance of roads has given me a very regular and isolated time for thought as well as visual image.
Another series on bone density seen in x-rays of beautiful fine and fragile structures, stitching and bleaching representing the thinning and wearing away, lines criss-crossing, meshing and supporting.
Ideas as part of my life are abstracted sometimes beyond any recognition, but they are usually poignant memories or celebrations within my life. Most recently I have been engaged with piles of boxes put out for recycling, these have provided new thoughts about surface and structures, containment and emptiness.
My work has been exhibited widely both at home and abroad over many years, and collected by several prestigious museums. I continue to work, maybe out of habit, but always feeling there is more to be done, improved upon, or a new challenge or idea to be expressed. Creativity is both a curse and a privilege. -
