Artist's Statement
Over the more recent past many Japanese have been influenced by the culture of Europe and America. The relevance of traditional Japanese culture has been lost and equally the culture of traditional Asia has not been valued, there has been a loss of identification with Asia.
The "Houses of Asia" series has emerged through my experience of seeing houses in different places. From these "Houses", it is difficult to specify which region and which race they would belong to. “Houses" represent a place of relief where a family lives; and the "Village" represents a place in which a community lives while helping each other. These qualities are being lost in modern, urban life; people have lost the ability to appreciate and create such environments, whereas I think such possibilities exist in the life of the country in old Asia.
It is thought that modern craft-making should be a considered reflection of a particular historical and social background. Art as a personal expression is fundamental for the future of the human race otherwise the meaning of existence will become frivolous and lacking in richness of thought and experience. Those who produce should often think about the underlying concept and be conscious of their materials and consider the demands of society. Deterioration of the natural environment and a rapid decrease of resources are urgent problems. Extreme poverty exists in developing countries while the most advanced experience a material richness. The rich-poor gap is also evident in the rising nations. We need to observe and evaluate the making of crafts from various aspects, and to consider the effect and the influence created by making craft goods.
Craft works can be a leading force, providing the mental richness so necessary for the future. If oil resources disappear, the necessity to re-examine craft technology will result. We should preserve and pass on traditional skills, and those traditional technologies should be revalued in a contemporary context with universities playing an ever important role.
