Artist's Statement
I am drawn to spaces that evoke a certain physical or emotional state. This could be called a place of emerging tactile experience. I am interested in the experiences that arise from the atmosphere created by the presence of the form, the inside and outside of the form, and the interplay of light and shadow. I also explore how art works are situated in space and how this can create an experience that stimulates all the senses.
In weaving the cloth, I feel that I am gathering together lines that create a surface but it could also be said that I am creating countless holes. I perceive woven cloth which is thin but three-dimensional as a porous structure which represents passage of time and movement of the hands. This form is not solid or closed but open to the surrounding space and breathing. It is certainly created intentionally, however I do not so much form the shape according to my will but rather I value the shape which arise from the weaving, and I explore the form that respects the behavior of the textile. The process of art making, particularly the process of dying thread and weaving itself has been deeply connected with my thoughts.
