THE CATALOGUE

The catalogue is one of the four key development areas in the Textural Space project. Bi-lingual and full colour, it gives an historical perspective and a contemporary context with essays written by Japanese experts in the field. The rigorous training and philosophy which informs this discipline within Japan is highlighted through descriptions of the background and working methods of each of the selected artists.

CONTRIBUTORS

  • Mr. Uchiyama, Director of The Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, has written the main essay giving an overview and setting the context.
  • Associate Professor Tsuji has contributed an essay in which he discusses commissioning and the role of Japanese textile art in public spaces.
  • Keiko Kawashima, director of Gallery Gallery Kyoto has contributed an essay on Japanese textile art in an international context.
  • Lesley Millar, curator Textural Space, contributed an essay giving the UK perspective.

CATALOGUE CONCEPT

The catalogue reflects the nature of the work in the exhibition not only through content but also through its production. The catalogue design team, Gerry Diebel and Pauline Mosley at Direct Design, have been working with the curator from the very earliest stages of the project to ensure that the design of the catalogue describes both the character of the work and the concept of the exhibition.

The Kyoto based photographer Toshiharu Kawabe was commissioned to take the photographs for the catalogue.

It is a distinguished book in both design and content ensuring a life independent of and beyond the exhibition with both education institutions and the general public.

The catalogue features Conqueror© papers and was printed in England by Albany House

Agano Spread

'There is a huge variety of work and, in spite of the labour intensiveness, the artists have maintained a lightness and freshness which appears effortless, like breathing....visitors respond as if in a sacred space. It is for most a spiritual experience.....For those unable to visit this extraordinary and beautiful exhibition there is a superb catalogue which reflects the exhibition's design and sensibilities...'
