SITE
SENSITIVE COMMISSIONS
The Japanese
have a history of commissioning large-scale textile works for specific
environments and the artists in Textural Space have much experience
in this field. The exhibition seeks to draw attention to the use of textiles
as a response to space and how this can affect our experience of place.
Each artist has had detailed discussions with the curator about the nature
of the various venues in order that their work, through installation and
use of materials, may reflect the quality of space.
Textual
Space is a touring exhibition and the works must also be flexible
therefore there are 4 site-sensitive international co-commissions in non-gallery
spaces linked to each of the opening venues. The commissioned artist visited
the site before making the work to meet and discuss the commission with
the exhibition curator, gallery officers, Commissioning Officer from South
East Arts and, in the case of the commission for the Surrey Institute
of Art and Design, the architect. The artists then made the work in their
studios in Japan, returning to install it for the opening of Textural
Space.
