Cloth & Culture NOW
the artists - Lija Rage, Latvia

No doubt I am influenced by the place and culture I live in. Any influence does not show itself straight. I am equally influenced by the silver roughness of fisherman boats, or all the grey and brown-purple shades play of colors of the old city ancient brick up „Arts” as well as by Professional Arts – painting, sculpture, theatre. Long – term theatre work has contributed to my sense of space around textile object just the same theatre stage comes to life by light; my works also come to life by light – copper, silk and wood play of shades by light helps to create an image.

I am influenced by different cultures. I plunge into them with the help of literature. I am particularly interested in ancient cultured- drawings on caves walls in different parts of world, eastern culture with its mysterious magic, runes drawings in Scandinavia, Tibet sand Mandela, Egyptian pyramid drawings.

The world culture seems close and colorful to me due to its diversity.

I believe that modern world culture cannot be closed. Each of us grows up from the culture we live in, through centuries, which further on is subjected to other impacts and becomes interwoven with the world culture influences.

The Latvian textile art is diverse. Great part of it is within „applied arts” limits. It is preserved within pseudo ethnographic framework and 70 years long textile arts traditions which seem to old-fashioned at present.

Textile and fiber art are modern arts type for me wherein fiber is made use of. It is the type of arts bordering with four fine arts types of the same high requirements and tasks. I believe in its development in modern world.
